Why Protein Shakes are Vital for Building Muscle

This is a guest post from MuscleProgress.com

Protein Shakes are among the most popular choices people make for building muscle and also for weight loss; for different reasons in these two cases.

If you are looking to build muscle, purchasing protein powder in order to make your daily protein shakes it is something that is going to help you build muscle. During the exercises in the gym you muscle tissues suffer micro-fibrillar breaks; and it’s when the body repairs that breaks when muscle growth occurs.

In order for the body to repair muscle tissues after an intense workout session, the body needs aminoacids, the material muscles are made of, and protein is just a combination of aminoacids. So the cycle is simple: workout -> microfibrillar breaks -> recovery (sleeping + eating) -> muscle tissue repaired -> muscle growth.

Why do we need to eat protein shakes to gain muscle? It’s not that we NEED to take them, but it’s a very convenient way to take the protein as a shake. Also, aminograms of a lot of protein powders in the market are a very good, which helps in the muscle building process.

Protein Shakes or Weight Gainers?

In my experience you should consider taking weight gainers instead of protein shakes ONLY if you are a hard gainer, because you need a lot of calories if you want to build muscle. But that’s only because of your genetics, if your genetics are better and you gain muscle quickly (mesomorph) or if you tend to get fat easily (endomorph) you should take protein shakes, because you avoid getting fat by ingesting that extra calories that a weight gainer bring.

Weigh gainers are made of protein like regular protein shake and carbs. Depending on the quality of the product the majority of the carbs will be complex carbs or simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are sugars and we want to avoid them, if you are looking for a weight gainer make sure it contains less than 10gr of sugars per 100gr.

Convenience in Your Day to Day Life

In my personal experience it’s very hard to do 5+ solid meals a day. Your stomach is always very full and very heavy – you walk around with a dilated stomach – which is something that is far from looking good. Replacing 2-3 solid meals for 2-3 liquid meals – the protein shakes – will make your bodybuilding life a lot easier and more comfortable, also you will feel better because, as I said before, it is very difficult to eat solid meals every 2-3 hours.

Also you will skip cooking that much, you will save that precious time for you and not for the kitchen, which for some of us is vital in these days where we have very limited amount of free time. Also carrying a protein shake is much more convenient than carrying a Tupperware with your food and you consume it in a moment almost.

Very Good Aminogram for Building Muscle

As I stated earlier, there are a lot of protein products out there in the market. And some of them are very good, the top brands in general have very good protein products, you won’t go wrong choosing one or another.

These protein shakes have very good aminoacids that help muscle growth and compliment very good the protein taken from you solid meals, from your diet. Just take a look at the container and see all the different aminoacids it contains, and how much of every one it contains.

If you are looking to build muscle and get big I would recommend you start exercising first in the gym for a month or two, trying to eat 5 small meals a day. And then, after that period of time start replacing some solid meals for protein shakes (or weight gainer shakes if you are a hard gainer)
